Principal's Message

~Sam Sananikone

Time flies, and we are now roughly in the 9th and 10th weeks of our 2017 – 2018 Fall Semester. I’m very proud to be part of the San Jose Chinese School community.

SJCS is a nonprofit school and most of our school activities have been managed by our volunteer parents for decades. I’d like to take a few moment to thank everyone for their time and dedication to support our school. In addition, I’d like to thank my predecessors who had done an excellent job managing our school for these past years, especially Guang-Ting and Anthony whom I’ve had worked with under the Principal’s Office for the past two years. With good leadership, our school continues to head in the right direction with a very bright future ahead. My Vice Principal, Ms. Gloria Yu, and I will do our best to ensure that our school will continue to stay on track.

A brief history about SJCS. Our school was founded in 1974 and our school’s objective has always been to support our community to learn Chinese as well as to understand Chinese culture. As part of the efforts to stay relevant with the current situation, one of our key focus is now on Hanyu Pinyin. As an active member of the Association of Northern California Chinese Schools, ANCCS, we will continue to work closely with the organization to train and enhance our school programs.

Speaking of our memberships with ANCCS, our school has been enjoying the wonderful programs offered by ANCCS year round. Throughout the year, each ANCCS-member school will be invited to participate in many wonderful events hosted by the organization, and one of the recent memorable events was the annual Confucius Memorial Ceremony. As part of the thousand-year-old Chinese culture, Confucianism has been always playing a big role in influencing the Chinese language and culture. It’s always been an honor for our school and students to participate in this yearly event.

Our school has been very lucky to have an excellent group of teachers, who are committed to teach our students. With their strong dedication throughout the years, many students have successfully graduated from our program with a good level of proficiency in Chinese. As part of the ongoing efforts to acknowledge the good work of these teachers, a few teachers will be chosen to receive an outstanding award from the OCAC and the ANCCS. For the last school year, I’m glad to announce we have 3 teachers being awarded, Lynn Feng Laoshi, I-Hsin Chang Laoshi, and Tengmei Chao Laoshi. Please congratulate the teachers when you get a chance.

I’m looking forward to another successful year for SJCS, and I appreciate having the strong support from school parents, especially the board or vice board members who have kindly accepted my request to run our school as a director for the Academic (Didi/Wenchi/Vivian), Operation (Calvin/Brian), IT (En-Tao/Mark), Discipline (Beenchan/Mike) and Extracurricular (Anna) Departments.

This year, our Academic Department will host the Academic Contest on January 27th, 2018, and as part of the overall program sponsored by the ANCCS, each membered school will be sending their school’s winning students to participate in April. During the last spring semester, some of our SJCS students had won the contest, and I’d like to congratulate the students for his/her accomplishments. Their names are listed on the front page of this newsletter. Their success was due in part to the dedication of our teachers as well as our last year’s Academic Department staff members; (Sunny/Wenchi/Vivian)

Our school will be celebrating the year of the dog on February 10th 2018. This year, our Operation Department along with the help from previous parents, which include Shireen and Brian, just to name a few, have already kicked off the planning. I have no doubt that we will have another wonderful Chinese New Year’s celebrations as well as Teachers’ Appreciation banquette this year.

Keeping our students competitive as well as happy while learning Chinese at SJCS has been part of our mission, and our school continues to offer great extracurricular programs such as soccer, basketball, Chinese folk dance, painting and calligraphy, fun arts, flower arrangement, and Tai Chi. These programs have been managed well by our great teachers and coaches alike. Please check with the Extracurricular Department for more details when you have time. Later next year, we will continue our tradition by hosting our Sports Contest with other ANCCS-member schools.

The safety of our students, teachers, and parents has always been one of our school’s top priority, and it’s important that every parent who is or will be involved with safety patrol take the duty seriously. Please check with our Discipline Department director for more details as well.

Having a background in IT, I believe our overall success is due in part to how effectively we use our IT system, and I’m very excited to see few positive changes to our school website recently. Thanks to our strong IT team, I believe that our school will continue stay competitive for years to come.

Once again, thank you for your time reading this message, and I hope our students will continue to have wonderful experience learning Chinese at SJCS.
